Hmong Studies is a young field, and much of its foundational work is now written by Hmong scholars studying their own communities, a shift worth noticing as you read. Expect university-press monographs on migration, community formation, politics, and colonial history, built on oral interviews as often as archives. Students starting coursework should begin with Chia Youyee Vang's Hmong America for the diaspora and Mai Na M. Lee's Dreams of the Hmong Kingdom for the deeper past.
