A short school-library introduction to Hmong Americans for middle-grade readers, covering the history in Laos, the war, resettlement, and community life in the United States, with a recipe for egg rolls at the back. It is a series title from Checkerboard's immigrant-groups line and reads like one — brisk, illustrated, written to a template by an author who is not Hmong. Taken for what it is, it fills a real gap: this catalog has picture books for young children and memoirs and monographs for adults, and comparatively little a ten-year-old could be handed for a school report. That is the use here. Expect the flattening any twenty-page overview of a people involves, and follow it with A People's History of the Hmong for anyone who stays interested. For ages 8 to 12 and elementary libraries.
