Wisconsin holds one of the largest Hmong populations in the country, and Mai Zong Vue tells how that happened, from the Secret War through the camps to the churches and agencies that sponsored the first families into cities like Wausau, Eau Claire, and Milwaukee. Vue writes as a former refugee who spent a career in Wisconsin resettlement work, which shows in the attention to mechanism, who sponsored whom and what that cost on both sides. It is the natural companion to Hmong in Minnesota on this shelf, and reading them together makes clear how differently two neighboring states absorbed the same arrival. Short, readable, and written for a general audience rather than a seminar. For Wisconsin readers, local historians, and public and school libraries.
