Paj Huam

Poetry may be the strongest form in Hmong American writing, with a direct line back to the sung poetry of the oral tradition. Mai Der Vang's Afterland, which won the Walt Whitman Award, is the obvious first book, and the anthologies collect a wider circle of voices working through war, spirit, and inheritance. Readers who come for one poet tend to stay for the field.
