Michigan is not one of the states people name when they name Hmong America, which is precisely the reason for this book. Martha Aladjem Bloomfield assembles oral histories, photographs, and archival material to document a smaller community, tracing the same arc of migration, loss, and rebuilding through people who ended up in Detroit and Lansing rather than St. Paul or Fresno. Short and photograph-heavy, it is a local history rather than a scholarly account, and it works best read after one of the survey books here. Its value on this shelf is proportion: it makes clear that the Minnesota story is one settlement among many. For Michigan readers, oral historians, and public libraries.
