Dreams of the Hmong Kingdom

The Quest for Legitimation in French Indochina, 1850-1960

by Mai Na M. Lee · 2015

Why this book

Mai Na M. Lee reaches back past the Secret War to the century before it, when Hmong leaders in French Indochina maneuvered between empire, taxation, and messianic prophecy in pursuit of political recognition, what she frames as the dream of a Hmong kingdom. The book gives the war generation a prehistory: rivalries between leading clans, the rise of figures like Touby Lyfoung, and the millenarian revolts that shook the colonial order. Built on oral interviews with Hmong elders as well as the French archives, it is a scholarly monograph, dense with sources, and it rewards a reader who already has the general outline from a survey history. We shelve it under Hmong Studies rather than the Secret War because its story closes in 1960, just as the American chapter begins. For students, researchers, and serious history readers.
