The Making of Hmong America

Forty Years After the Secret War

by Kou Yang · 2019

Why this book

Kou Yang covers the whole arc in one volume: the Hmong role in the Secret War, the flight into Thai camps, the long argument over whether Hmong refugees were considered suitable for resettlement at all, and the four decades of community-building that followed. The framing detail worth noticing is that last one, since the resettlement debate is usually skipped in accounts that begin at arrival. Written by a Hmong American scholar who lived the period he documents, it works as the survey history this shelf otherwise lacks, sitting between the memoirs on one side and the specialist monographs on the other. Start here if you want the shape of the whole story before choosing where to go deeper. For university readers, community historians, and anyone teaching the Hmong American experience as a single arc.
