From Refugees to Citizens
by Vincent K. Her · 2012
The refugee story has been told; this collection asks what comes after it. Vincent K. Her and Mary Louise Buley-Meissner gather essays and personal accounts from Hmong Americans working out what the community becomes once the first generation's yearning for a lost place is no longer the organizing fact. Contributors write about ritual, clan obligation, university life, and the particular position of people raised entirely in the United States by parents who were not. It belongs here because most of the catalog's history shelf ends in 1975 or shortly after, and this is one of the few books that starts where those leave off. For general readers, university courses, and second- and third-generation readers looking for their own situation described.
