Momma's Christmas Gift

A Gift of the Magi retold in a working-class Hmong American family, out from Penguin in October 2026. Momma leaves for the factory before dawn six days a week and is always home before her children get hungry, having left three bowls of rice and egg on the table. Sister knows the family has little; she also loves the glowing Santa on the corner and the lit trees in other people's windows, and she and her siblings spend the season wishing. On Christmas Eve, Momma slips out with Auntie May. Kao Kalia Yang has written the refugee camp, resettlement, and racism for this age group already, and this is the quieter subject she returns to most often: what it costs a parent to make an ordinary childhood happen. Newest book on the shelf. For ages 4 to 8, and for December read-alouds.
