Yang Warriors

A true story from the Ban Vinai refugee camp, where Kao Kalia Yang spent her early childhood. The camp's children organize themselves into a crew of warriors, training with sticks and discipline, and when the little ones hunger for something fresh the older cousins venture beyond the camp to forage greens, an act of real risk and real love. Yang refuses to write camp life as deprivation alone; the book's insistence that refugee children were also brave, imaginative, and organized is its whole point, and Billy Thao's illustrations carry the heat and dust of the place. Best for elementary readers ready for a picture book with some weight, and valuable in classrooms where refugee experience is usually discussed in the abstract; this makes it particular.
