by Bela Davis · 2024
A 24-page library-series introduction to the Hmong language from Abdo Kids Junior, covering numbers one to twenty, the alphabet, colours, family words, animals, places and common courtesies. What lifts it above the usual series filler is that it includes a tone guide and a letter-sound guide, which is more than most English-language introductions to Hmong bother with and matters in a language where tone carries meaning. Written to Common Core alignment for school and library collections rather than for home, and it reads that way — brisk, illustrated, no narrative. It is not by a Hmong author and does not present itself as an insider account. For ages 5 to 8, for elementary libraries, and for teachers with a Hmong-speaking student who want to learn a few words correctly rather than approximately.
