Peoples of Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam
by Norma J. Livo, Dia Cha
The first collection of Hmong folktales published commercially in English, and still the standard one. Norma Livo and Dia Cha gathered twenty-seven stories, including creation accounts, trickster tales, and the origin stories that explain why the world is arranged as it is, and set them behind an introduction to Hmong history for readers meeting the culture for the first time. Dia Cha's presence is what distinguishes it from earlier missionary and anthropological collections: these were gathered within the community rather than about it. It is the source many later Hmong picture books draw from, including Nine-in-One, Grr! Grr! on this shelf. For storytellers, teachers, folklorists, and families reading aloud.
