Mai Der Vang's third collection turns from the archive toward the ecological. Where Yellow Rain worked with declassified documents, Primordial takes up what the war left in the land itself and what descendants inherit from a violence they did not witness, a postmemory carried in bodies and landscapes rather than records. The poems are visually restless, using the page as a field, and the Hmong presence in them is less a subject than a vantage. Read after Afterland and Yellow Rain, it completes an arc in which one poet moves from mourning to investigation to something closer to reckoning with time. It belongs here as the most recent major work by a Hmong American poet and as evidence that the literature is still opening new ground. For readers of contemporary poetry and for university courses in Asian American literature.
